Exploring Rinchenpong: Your Ultimate Guide to Sikkim Silent Valley

Rinchenpong Sikkim is a newly discovered gem in Sikkim that is located in the western part of the state at an elevation of 1,700 feet. Nestled in the eastern Himalayan foothills, this picturesque village is known as the “silent valley”.

It is close to the Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, about 40 kilometers from Gangtok and 33 Kilometers from Pelling. Rinchenpong is famous for its breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and its peaceful atmosphere.

It is a paradise for nature lovers because it is rich in diverse plant and animal life. The dense forests are often covered in fog and are home to many birds, including tailorbirds, bulbuls and mynahs. Locals grow black cardamom, ginger and turmeric on terraced fields, and there are orchards with oranges, cherries, kiwis, pine and chestnut trees.

The area bursts with colorful rhododendrons, orchids, wildflowers and roses in Spring, while winter showcases bright red poinsettias and clear views of the snow-covered peaks. Rinchenpong, along with nearby Kaluk, has recently become popular with tourists.

It was once known as the place where the British retreated in 1860 after the Lepchas poisoned their only drinking water source. Today, many local Lepcha families, like those in Darap, are turning their homes into homestays where you can experience their food, culture and daily life.
